Ayman lives in Kenya with his grandparents Shosho and Babuk, who cherish two colorful lovebirds kept in a small cage. Every day Ayman watches as the birds snuggle together but wishes they had more space to spread their wings. When Ayman and Babuk commission a bright red cage from the blacksmith it seems perfect yet the birds still long for freedom. After one bird escapes and Shosho advises letting it go, Ayman bravely frees the second bird so they can happily reunite in a tall tree. Together with his grandmother he fills feeders under the tree and soon a joyful flock of lovebirds returns to show that kindness and freedom bring the greatest happiness.

Once upon a time, there was a boy named Ayman. He lived in Kenya. He lived with Babuk and Shosho. Shosho was his grandma. Babuk was his grandpa.

Shosho loved little birds. She had two sweet lovebirds. They were green and orange. They lived in a small cage.

Every day, Ayman watched the birds. The birds sat very close. They loved each other. But Ayman felt sad. The cage was very small.

One day, Ayman and Babuk made a plan. They wanted a big bird house. They visited the strong blacksmith.

The blacksmith made a big cage. It had nice diamond shapes. He painted the cage bright red. By night, the house was done.

Because of that, the birds moved. They went into the red house. For one week, Ayman was happy. Then, he saw a sad thing.

The birds bit the metal bars. Because of that, they wanted to leave. When Ayman's cousins visited, one escaped!

The green bird flew out fast. It flew to a big tree. Shosho smiled a soft smile. "Let it go," Shosho said.

The other bird stayed inside. It cried for its sweet friend. It felt very scared and alone.

Until finally, Ayman opened the cage. He set the second bird free. It flew up, up, up! It sat in the big tree.

The two birds were together again. They sang a very happy song. And ever since that day, the cage stayed empty.

Shosho made nice bird feeders. Ayman filled them with seeds. They waited by the big tree.

Soon, many lovebirds flew down! Green and orange birds filled the yard. Ayman smiled a big smile. Birds are happiest when they are free.
