Getting a CT Scan
By AlsonAI

Five-year-old Alex shows courage as she faces her first CT scan at the hospital with her caregiver by her side. A friendly technologist guides her onto the scanner’s gentle sliding bed and explains how to stay still and use special picture water for clearer images. Alex keeps her body as calm as a statue while she imagines her favorite park and holds her stuffed toy. She learns that the doughnut-shaped scanner is not scary and that her important job helps doctors understand her body. By the end, Alex feels proud and confident, ready for whatever comes next.
Meet Alex. She is a brave five-year-old girl. Today, she is wearing a light blue hospital gown covered in sleepy tigers. Alex is visiting the hospital today.
Alex is resting in a calm, quiet hospital room. Her Caregiver is sitting right beside her.
Alex has been feeling a little sick, and her care team wants to help her feel better. To figure out what is making her feel bad, the doctors need to see inside her body.
How do they do that? They use a CT scan! A CT is a special camera that takes pictures of your insides. Instead of a regular camera, it looks just like a giant, thick doughnut!
Soon, it is time to go to the CT room. Alex gets a fun ride in a wheelchair down the wide hospital hallway. Her Caregiver walks right beside her, holding her hand.
When they roll into the room, Alex sees the giant doughnut camera and a long bed that slides right through inside. A friendly Technologist comes over to say hello.
The Technologist is the person who takes the pictures and helps Alex get her body in the perfect position and makes sure she is comfortable and cozy on the sliding bed.
Alex climbs up and lies down on the long bed. The bed feels a little firm and slightly cool against her back. The Technologist helps move her body into the exact right spot.
"You have a very important job today," the Technologist explains with a smile. "You must keep your body very, very still. Just like a frozen statue!"
"Still bodies help the camera take the best pictures." Alex practices freezing in place. Then, the Technologist tells her about special "picture water" called contrast.
It goes safely through the little IV tube in Alex's arm to make the pictures brighter. "It will make you feel warm all over," the Technologist says.
"It might even feel like you are going pee, even when you are not! It is normal and goes away fast." Alex feels the gentle warm glow inside, just as she was told.
Now, the big moment begins! The Technologist steps safely behind a window, but she can still see Alex and talk to her through a speaker. Her Caregiver stays close by her side.
Slowly, the long bed slides into the middle of the giant doughnut circle. The camera starts to make a soft, gentle humming sound. Nothing touches Alex, and nothing hurts her at all.
She remembers her most important job. She holds her soft stuffed toy tightly. She closes her eyes, thinks about her favorite park, and breathes slowly.
When the Technologist kindly asks her to hold her breath, Alex takes a slow breath in and holds it. She stays as quiet and still as a perfect stone statue!
"All done!" the Technologist says warmly through the speaker. The soft humming stops, and the bed gently glides back out of the camera.
Alex sits up and wiggles her toes. Her Caregiver gives her a huge, proud smile, and Alex feels very proud, too.
The doctors will look at the pictures to decide what happens next. If Alex has any questions about her scan, she can always ask her Care Team, Child Life Specialist, or Caregiver.
The giant doughnut camera, or CT scan, was not scary at all! Alex did her job perfectly, taking big breaths and keeping her body still! Yay, Alex!
